Myth #1: Asbestos Is No Longer Around
Although it would be nice if this myth were indeed true, the fact is that mesothelioma causing asbestos is still around. It is true that the United States does regulate asbestos now better than ever before, but three-thousand consumer goods which are being sold on the market still contain asbestos.
Items which are seemingly innocuous and can be found at home improvements stores such as - joint compound, roofing shingles, drywall caulking and gaskets are just some products which may contain asbestos and increase mesothelioma risk.
The products will most likely not contain the word 'asbestos', but instead could be referred to as “Canadian fiber” or “chrysotile,”.
These are indeed forms of asbestos. If asbestos materials are stable and not damaged, they are not likely to be dangerous. If they are old or damaged, they can become an issue.
This is because when the break down they become dust and thus can be inhaled. Inhalation of the dust can lead to mesothelioma.
Myth #2 Another misconception is that one must be exposed to a vast amounts of asbestos in order to become ill. This is simply not the case. Asbestos exposure, even in small quantities is not safe. When inhaled, even small particles of asbestos can cause mesothelioma.
Myth #3 Wearing a mask while working with asbestos will protect you from getting mesothelioma. Masks may help to some degree, but particles can still enter your system even if you're working with a mask. So working with a mask will not ensure that you are protected from developing mesothelioma.
Myth #4-Asbestos or mesothelioma is something invented by greedy mesothelioma attorneys in order to cash in on others misery.
Litigation for mesothelioma is indeed one of the most popular lawsuit issues, but just because this is the case - it does not mean that the issue is overblown or something contrived by mesothelioma attorneys in order to get rich.
The cancer caused by asbestos is now well documented to the point that the scientific community has accepted the that asbestos causes mesothelioma. Greedy mesothelioma attorneys are a reality - but the disease is real and asbestos is the cause.
Myth # 5 One must work around asbestos for years in order to develop mesothelioma. This is not true and may be a result of the fact that it usually takes decades for cancer to develop as a result of being exposed to asbestos.
There are confirmed cases in which the afflicted party was only temporarily exposed to asbestos. The amount of asbestos the party has inhaled does make a difference in the likelihood of developing an illness, but even slight amounts of inhaled asbestos can lead to illness.
Myth #6 Asbestos in all forms in dangerous. Generally if the item containing asbestos is in tact - the person who comes in contact with the item is usually safe. The real danger occurs when the item is broken down so that dust is readily inhaled.
